The buzz around town…

A honey of a time promised at the Grate Spelling Bee

Posted

The popular favorite Grate Spelling Bee is returning soon.

The event will be held at the Pioneer Heritage Center at Western Oklahoma State College (WOSC) on Saturday, April 1 from 9 a.m. until noon.

To enter the “hive,” enter through the southwest door by the gymnasium.

Sign up deadline is Friday, March 24. Please drop by the Altus Public Library for a registration form.

More information can be found by calling the Bruce Davis, the spelling bee’s coordinator, at the library at 580-477-2890.

Entry is $125 per team, which can consist of two or three adults. The entry includes three mulligans (do-overs) per team. Study guides will be provided upon payment of the fee.

If groups need a sponsor for all or any part of the entry fee, call Davis to see if scholarships are available.

All proceeds benefit the Great Plains Literacy Council, who is hosting the event.

In past years, the Grate Spelling Bee drew large crowds of spelling wanna-bees and spectators. Organizers are optimistic for a return of the popularity of the spelling bee.

The public is encouraged to participate and support the GPLC by entering a spelling team. Friendly rivalries are part of the fun.

Teams can even dress up in bee costumes, or in black and yellow, to join in the festivities.

Remember: Bee there or bee square!
