He was born July 4, 1933, in Gould, Harmon County, Oklahoma, to the late Verl and Bessie (Osburn) Smalling. He graduated from Martha High School in 1951 as class salutatorian.
He was drafted into the army on June 17, 1953, and served approximately 19 months in Panama. After the service, he continued his education earning his Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Oklahoma State University. He began working for Humble Oil Company in 1958 (which later became Exxon Corporation) and retired after a 36-year career.
He married JoAnn Dickey in 1960 and celebrated 52 years of marriage in January 2012.
He was a member of Highland Oaks Church of Christ in Plano, Texas.
He is survived by his wife, JoAnn, of Carrollton; four children,Dickey Smalling and wife Shirley of Atlanta, Ga., Ken Smalling and wife Kris of Carrollton, Rodney Smalling of Little Elm, Texas, Sharla Smalling of Lubbock, Texas; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and an older brother, Wallace Smalling.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Mattie Dee Click.
Visitation will be Monday from 6 to 8 p.m., and funeral services at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 12, at Ted Dickey West Funeral Home, 8011 Frankford Rd., in Dallas, Texas. Interment will be at 6 p.m., June 12, at Blair Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
