AHS boys third, girls fourth

The AHS Bulldog swimming team started off their season with a good showing and some State qualifying times at the Harrah Invitational on Saturday.
The girls finished 4th in a field of 13 teams. The boys narrowly missed 2nd place by one point and placed 3rd in a field of 12 teams. Garret Thompson (junior) was top place medal winner for the Bulldogs. He placed 3rd in the 50 freestyle with a State time of 23:97 and 3rd in the 100 back with a State time of 1:03.21.
Senior standout Paul Davis placed 2nd in the 200 IM by swimming a State time of 2:12.36, and 4th in the 100 breast with a State time of 1:08.88. Sophomore Matt Aguilar also qualified the 50 free with a24:91 and the 100 back with a 1:03.87. Freshmen Daniel Brown qualified the 100 free with a 55:17 for a 5th place finish.
All three boys’ relays posted State times. Aguilar, Matt Bowen, Matthew Cole, and Davis placed 3rd in the 200 medley relay. Brown, Aguilar, Tyler Menchaca Forster, and Thompson placed 3rd in the 200 free relay. Thompson, Brown, Bowen, and Davis placed 3rd in the 400 free relay.
Senior Chasity Cooper led the girls’ with a 4th place finish in the 200 IM. She made a State time of 2:36.00. Cooper finished 6th in 100 free. The girls’ 200 medley relay received a State time of 2:11.79. Cassidy Pearl, Cooper, Bailey Dickson, and Taylor McEntire swam this relay. Dickson, Brittany Merriott, Pearl, and Cooper placed 6th in the 200 free relay with a State time of 2:00.74.
“Michael (Assistant Coach Michael Shive) and I were very pleased with this opening. We had some good times, and several narrowly missed those State cutoff times. They will continue to get faster as the season progresses,” said Coach Linda Wiginton.
The Bulldog swim team goes to Wichita Falls on Thursday, and will open at home on Friday at 3:15.
