Nearly three years have passed since the Museum of the Western Prairie closed for an asbestos removal project. But recently officials met at the museum in a final step before work begins. Now on April 27, basic reconstruction of the effected areas will proceed.

The project allows for 150 days, a window of time that extends into late October, but the general contractor hopes to complete work approximately one month earlier. At the conclusion, the library, foyer, and office areas will be fully functional. Half the museum exhibits, however, will still have to be rebuilt in a separate project that immediately follows.

The Museum of the Western Prairie expects to reopen by 2011.
