Larry L. Guffey, 7o, Amarillo, Texas, and formerly of Altus, died June 27, 2013.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Washington Ave. Christian Church with Charlie Cox and Ron Lee II officiating. Burial will be at Llano Cemetery by Cox Funeral Home.
Larry was born on Aug. 5, 1942 in Wichita Falls, Texas to Charlie and Louise Guffey. He was a graduate of Altus High School in 1961 and was offered a full academic Scholarship to Cambridge University. He graduated from Altus Junior College as well as Amarillo College. Larry served for many years in the United States National Guard. He married Debbie Crawford in Amarillo on Nov. 27, 1973 and moved to Amarillo in 1967.
He worked in the retail wine business in Amarillo for many years and was known to be one of the areas most knowledgable wine connisseurs. Larry had worked for the Hospitality House, Spirit Emporium as well as the Party Stop. At the time of his death, he was with M&R Liquor. He was a past winner of the International Chili Cook Off in Terlingua.
He was instrumental in Starting the Top of Texas Chili Pod. He will be remembered for his love of fine food and wine as well as his love for his two cats Anna and Louise.
Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Debbie; and by his parents.
Survivors include four sisters, Millie Bingham of Amarillo, Barbara Wolfe and husband Ira of LaVon, Fran Whistler and husband Bob of Plano and Ellen Miller also of Amarillo; five brothers, Charles Milburn Guffey and wife Marilyn of Houma, La., Howard Guffey of Wichita Falls, Gene Guffey and wife Liz of Dallas, Gary Butch Guffey of Wichita Falls and Carl Guffey and wife Beverly of Amarillo; 24 nieces and nephews; 32 great-nieces and -nephews and great-great-neices and -nephews, all who loved him very much.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and request memorials to Baptist St. Anthonys Hospice or to the West Texas Chili Pod.
Family will be at 3102 S. Tyler.
