James Orson Bates was born Oct. 26, 1935 in Los Angeles, Calif., and departed this life on April 29, 2013.

Mr. Bates attended Oklahoma State University and retired in January 1999 as an electronics instructor from Career Tech Center in Altus. He was an active member and elder of the First Christian Church of Wylie, Texas.

Mr. Bates is survived by his wife, Barbara of Murphy, Texas; a son, Shawn of Houston; a daughter, Erin and son-in-law Eddy Graves of Lancaster, Calif.; a daughter, Angelique and son-in-law Scott Whitley of Stillwater; a step-son, Parks Wilson and daughter-in-law Jennifer of Murphy; a brother, David and sister-in-law Josie of Prescott, Ariz.; a sister, Caroline and brother-in-law Carroll Sammons of Fallbrook, Calif.; a sister, Cynthia and brother-in-law Alan Waldman of The Villages, Fla.; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Orson James Bates; his mother, Helen May Bachelder; and a daughter, Baby Bates.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, May 31, at First Christian Church of Wylie, followed at 2 p.m. by a graveside service at Fairview Cemetery in Denison, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Christian Church of Wylie, Altus First Christian, The Salvation Army, or to a charity of your choice.

Services are under the direction of Rest Haven Funeral Home of Rowlett, Texas.
