The Altus city-wide clean up officially began on Saturday, Feb. 23, as groups of volunteers patrolled the major thoroughfares and community parks for scattered trash, in the snow. The falling snow impaired some visibility of litter on sides of the roads, but, according to the Altus Chamber of Commerce, volunteers were still able to collect approximately 1,800 lbs. of trash that went into a roll off dumpster and sent to the landfill.

Counting over 450 volunteer workers who took part in this first step, the Chamber of Commerce estimates an average of $18,000 savings to the City of Altus.

All volunteers enjoyed Extra Value Meal coupons donated by McDonald’s in Altus.

Members from Alley Cats, Altus Air Force Base, Altus Chamber of Commerce, Altus High School National Honor Society, Altus Opinions and Discussions, Boy Scouts Club of Prince of Peace, City of Altus, Department of Corrections, Grace United Methodist Church, Jackson County 4-H Club, Jackson County Health Action Team, Lion’s Club, Lodge #62, McDonald’s, Men of Faith Breakfast Group, NBC of Oklahoma, and United Methodist Church, Main Street Altus, Altus Rotary, Altus Lions, Altus Kiwanis Club, Western Oklahoma State College, Southwest Technology Center, Altus Realtors, The Altus Times, KEYB and KWHW radio stations, made this community wide effort a success.

The next Clean Up Altus meeting is expected to be held in April, with the event scheduled for May 11. Anyone interested in joining this effort is asked to call the Altus Chamber of Commerce at 580-482-0210 to sign up.
