Duke girls, Tipton boys reign as Cottonbelt champs

The Duke girls and the Tipton boy reign as champions of the Cottonbelt Basketball Tournament.

Duke defeat Tipton 47-45 and Tipton downed Blair 53-39 in the finals Saturday night at the Western Oklahoma State College gym.

Duke 47, Tipton 45

Girls Championship

Madison Gilliam hit a short range shot with six seconds left to give Duke a 47-45 lead. Tipton called time out with four seconds left to give Coach Kenny White a chance to plot strategy.

Duke applied full-court pressure on the in bounds pass. Tipton rushed the ball up the floor but a desperation three-point shot at the buzzer by Chelsea Heidebrecht was not good.

Tipton’s Kenedy Gilbert had 18 points to lead all scorers. Heidebrecht, the tournament’s most valuable player had 10 points.

Duke received a 12 point performance from Marilyn Stevenson and 10 points from Aspen Hall.

Tipton 53, Blair 39

Boys Championship

The Tipton Tigers used their athleticism to a full advantage in this game. The Tigers led by seven going into the final quarter and outscored the Broncs 19-12 down the stretch to win the game.

Josh Torres, the tournament’s most valuable player, hit a shot with 4:37 remaining to give Tipton a 43-31 lead and that was too much for Blair to overcome.

Torres scored 26 points to win high scoring honors. Tanner Knight had 14 points.

Blair was led by Cheston Shaw who finished with 14 points.

Blair 27, Erick JV 21

Girls 3rd place

Blair held Erick to just two points in the second and third periods. The Lady Broncs a 20-9 lead going into the final eight minutes.

The Lady Bearcats could not make that up.

Kendalyn Shaw led Blair with 10 points. Savannah Osmond paced Erick with eight points.

Olustee 61, Erick 43

Boys 3rd place

It was a close game through the first half but Olustee outscored the Bearcats 36-17 in third and fourth quarters to break the game open.

Taylor Avila was ring leader for the Eagles with 29 points. Dylan Sanchez finished with 13 points.

Erick was led by Cole May’s 14 points.

Davidson 63, Eldorado 46

Girls Consolation Championship

It was disastrous third second quarter for Eldorado who was outscored 21-2 in those eight minutes.

That proved to be the difference.

Samantha Vantrees and Cierra Dennis both scored nine points to lead Eldorado.

Karley Patterson scored 17 points to pace the Lady Sandies.

Duke 68, Eldorado 45

Boys Consolation Championship

Tatum Crouch and Bray Houston combined for 46 point to lead Duke.

Crouch, a freshman had 24 points and Houston finished with 22 points.

Eldorado’s Justin Medina hit seven 3-point shots and had 31 points.
