The MacDowell Club of Allied Arts met for its December meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012, at the First Christian Church at 7 p.m. Co-hostesses were Jennie Buchanan, Annelle Barton, Betty Marcha, and Brenda Risner.
President Catherine Coke called the meeting to order. She then led the members in the club collect. The members, led by Catherine Coke and accompanied by Mary Jane Hamende, sang “White Christmas” by Irving Berlin.
President Coke asked Secretary Kathy Bayers to call roll. The minutes were emailed earlier and were approved with one correction. Treasurer Betty Marcha read the balances of accounts. The committee reports were asked for and given. There was no old business. Susan Grimes introduced new Business.
Member Nancy Cox was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award during the first Junior High/Middle School 2012 National Conference held in Dallas, Texas. The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Cox for exceptional commitment to the musical achievement of middle level singers and teachers. Approximately 8,750 singers went through her programs at Northeast Junior High, Altus Middle School, and Altus Junior High. On the national choral music stage, she served as a junior high/middle school guest clinician and choral specialist for festivals, honor choirs, and teacher workshops in forty states. She conducted ACDA Division Junior High/ Middle School Honor Choirs in San Diego. Cox served as the first Nation Junior High/Middle School Honor Repertoire and Standards Chair and organized the first Nation Honor Choir in 1985 in salt Lake City. During both of her national chair appointments, she organized and executed national honor choirs in Salt Lake City, San Antonio, New York City and Los Angeles. Additionally, Cox served eight years as the National Repertoire and Standard Chair, a nationally elected position for the American Choral Director’s Association, with a membership of approximately 20,000 choral musicians both in the United States and abroad. She retired from that position in 2011. Congratulations, Nancy!
After the business meeting, the program, introduced by Janice Pellam, continued the theme of Tin Pan Alley with “Tinsel and Tunes.” Janice gave the members wonderful background information on Irving Berlin and the song “White Christmas.” She the introduced flutist Mary Runyan, accompanied by Catherine Coke, who played, “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas,” and “We Need a Little Christmas.” Then the members sang, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” accompanied by Mary Jane Hamende. The finale of “Angels We Have Heard on High” and “The First Noel” was sung by the members accompanied on violins by Susan Grimes and Patricia Smith. Members were served delectable Christmas cookies and Christmas jello. Members attending were Annelle Barton, Yudell Barton, Kathy Bayers, Catherine Coke, Ken Cox, Nancy Cox, Mary Jane Hamende, Betty Marcha, Opal Norris, Lynn Osterhout, Janice Pellam, Mary Runyan, Patricia Smith, Kally Tuttle, Elizabeth Wallace, and Jackie Witte, with associate members Shirlee Bailey, Bettie Peters, Brenda Risner, and Gloria Rustmann.
The next meeting is Wednesday, Jan. 16, at the Museum of the Western Prairie starting at 7 p.m.
