Byrl Bond Shumaker, 81, of Eldorado, passed away Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital in Altus.
Byrl was born Oct. 16, 1931, in Eldorado to Ernest and Liffa (Mayberry) Shumaker. He attended Midway and Eldorado Schools. In high school, he played baseball and basketball. Byrl was a member of FFA and bonded with his instructor, C.G. McMindes. During his high school years, he showed several champion steers, lambs, and hogs. After graduation, Byrl worked at the Standard Milling Company in Altus, which was managed by James Holder. He also worked at the Sooner Boat Factory in Eldorado and was a seasonal worker during ginning season at the Eldorado Co-op.
Being raised on the farm, he helped his dad, who owned and operated a dairy. In 1957, he began his own farming and cattle operation. In recent years, Byrl he was quite proud of his red angus herd. He loved reading, traveling, and was a real history buff. He could answer just about any questions that was asked of him. Byrl loved to travel to historic places and increase his knowledge of historical trivia.
He married Betty Jo White on Jan. 16, 1960, in Eldorado. To this union two children were born: Curtis Scott and Lisa Gail. Byrl was very active in the Eldorado School activities, especially 4-H and FFA. He was a devoted supporter of the basketball teams. He was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed the University of Oklahoma teams.
Byrl was a member of the High Point and Eldorado Methodist Churches. He was active in clubs and organizations such as Lions Club, FFA and 4-H Booster Clubs, Oklahoma Farmers Union, Farmers Co-op, Red Angus Association, where he served on several boards, and Woodman of the World.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Liffa Shumaker; one brother, Dillon Shumaker; and sisters, Ernestine Easley and Bonnie Walker.
Byrl is survived by his loving wife, Betty Shumaker, of the home in Eldorado; son, Curtis Shumaker of Los Angeles, Calif.; daughter, Lisa Shumaker and James Jennings of Norman; two brothers, Elbert Shumaker and wife Carolyn of Mangum, and Byrls twin, Myrl Bach Shumaker and wife Yvonne of Kerrville, Texas; and a host of nieces, nephews, and many wonderful friends.
The family has requested that memorial donations be made in Byrls name to the Odema Cemetery Fund, c/o of Gerald Neeley, 18968 ECR 177, Eldorado, OK, or the Methodist Youth Group, P.O. Box 296, Eldorado, OK 73537.
The family will receive friends today at Lowell-Tims Chapel in Eldorado from 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, 907 Main in Eldorado with the Rev. Bobby Jones officiating. Interment will follow at the Odema Cemetery east of Eldorado under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
