It wasn’t pretty but never-the-less it’s a win and Coach Jerry Kassin and the Western Oklahoma State College Lady Pioneers will take it.

After leading for most of the way, the Lady Pioneers fell behind but outscored Southwestern Christian College 13-4 down the stretch to earn a 69-62 victory before a Thursday night homecoming crowd.

It was a turnover, foul infested game in which 95 free throws were shot. The two teams combined to commit 65 fouls. Western was 33 of 53 from the free throw line while the visitors made only 19 of 42 charity tosses.

It was the Nelms sisters Mahogany and Ebony that sparked the Western comeback. The two scored 12 of Western’s last 13 points.

Mahogany hit a shot with 3:52 left to give the Lady Pioneers a 60-58 lead, a lead they would never surrender.

Mahogany hit a free with 1:05 remaining and Western led 67-59. That was too much for SWCC to overcome.

Mahogany led all scorers with 22 points. Tatyana Bell had 14 points and Ebony finished with 11 points.

Western is 2-2 on the season. They will host Clarendon, Texas at 2 p.m. Saturday.
