Coach Chad Stone and the Altus High School Bulldogs knew they had a big task on their hands in their district game with Del City here on Friday night. A talented group of Eagles came to town and won in dominating fashion in a 48-0 romp.
It didn’t start out well as the Bulldogs, who mishandled a pooch kick on the opening kick off which led to the first Eagle touchdown. Altus also mishandled another kick off and that led to another Del City score.
In a nutshell, the Del City mammoth offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage and quarterback John McBride was just too much for the Bulldogs to handle. The 6-1, 180 pound senior, accounted for five touchdowns, three on the ground and two through the air. He rushed for 122 yards on 17 carries and was six of nine passing for 137 yards.
As a team the Eagles accounted for 460 yards in offense, 323 on the ground and 137 through the air.
Stone agreed that his team went up against a very good football team.
“Yes they are,” he said. “They are big up front, they had speed to the edges and then to boot that quarterback in the run game was the butt kicker of the middle that just gassed you. He singled handily beat Midwest City. We knew they would have some offensive success but I was disappointed in that we set up so many of their drives in a faze of the game that we felt like we had an advantage in (the special teams.) If we had won the toss we were going to defer and we were going to on side kick. We thought they were susceptible to onside kicks. Those two pooch kicks, there is no reason that we don’t recover those.”
Altus did have a couple of opportunities to score. On the Bulldogs second offensive possession they drove from their own 39 yard line to the Del City 17 in nine plays, however that march stalled.
Also nose tackle Eric Perez came up with with interception of a McBride screen pass deep in Altus territory. Perez intercepted at the Altus 17 and returned to the Eagles 29 yard line. However a 15 personal foul penalty killed the Bulldogs drive.
It was a difficult loss for the Bulldogs, who fell to 1-5 and 1-2 in district play.
Stone was asked what he told the players following the game.
“I told them they are six games gone out of this season,” Stone said. “We’re 1-2 in district. We could play club-league type football, we could go down and have a pretty good ball game with Southeast (Oklahoma City Southeast, next week’s opponent. And we probably would send out the seniors pretty good on senior night against Capitol Hill (final game of the year against Oklahoma City Capitol Hill) and get our butts handed to us in between those two games in the middle (against Lawton MacArthur and Ardmore) by just doing the same as we have been. Or for the last four weeks of the regular season we could show up to work every single game with the mind set, we’re going to get better each and every rep and we’re going to give our maximum effort every single rep. We just talked about the fact that none of us give us our absolute best all of the time. But it’s not like it’s going to make us any worse off if we did.”
