The Fresh Paint Day Project, according to Main Street’s AmyJo Cobb, consisted of three working Saturdays in the month of September. On the third scheduled Saturday a large team of volunteers combined the Fresh Paint Day project with our downtown cleanup called “Alley Cats”. Cobb said they had wonderful participation from the community, 25 the first weekend, 15 the second and 21 the final Saturday plus an additional 36 that participated in Alley Cats.

The first working Saturday they did prep work on the first level of the building by removing signage and mailboxes from the two businesses that house in the one building at 209 North Main. The volunteers started with a layer of primer on the aluminum doors and framing, and the first layer of paint covering up the already painted brick and trimming of the windows with the trim color.

The second working Saturday they borrowed the City of Altus bucket truck to remove old, unused cable and telephone lines that were attached to the building on the second level. That’s when Cobb said they got a closer eye to the second part of our paint project. Several working weeks were needed for the second floor façade before painting could take place. The committee chairs met on the following Monday and decided to continue the work planned for the main level and to use the remaining paint on the north wall heading into the future Alley Park instead of for the second floor façade.

The final the third Saturday work continued with the second layer of paint, touch up’s and putting signage back up on the façade. The north side wall was completed and details accomplished.

Those who participated in this event include: Volunteers from Altus Air Force Base; City of Altus Street Commissioner, Holmes Willis; City of Altus Planning Director, Barbara Burleson; 31 Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) volunteered for Alley Cats. The President of Main Street Altus, Shannon Preston, and Main Street Altus board members were also in attendance.
