Passing storms dropped 1.18 inches of rain on Altus last night starting at about 9 p.m. Most of the heavy rain, winds, lighting and sporadic hail ended within an about an hour and a half. Some residents reported brief power outages, but no major damage was reported. One resident on Mallard Ct. reported that one of their trees was hit by lighting, another on N. Howse reported lightning hitting their front yard, and one in the 200 block of Williams reported a lightning strike and that they could smell electrical smoke.

The City of Altus also checked several reports of sparks from utility poles during the storm.

Chances for more thunderstorms continue through Friday, with 30 to 50 percent chances of rain each day. After a reprieve on Saturday, rain chances are back in the forecast for Sunday.

Although Altus received over an inch from Tuesday night’s storm, nearby Frederick only received .02 of an inch, and Hobart only receive .87 of an inch.

Tonight, look for rain and thunderstorm chances to increase to 40 percent. Rainfall amounts near 0.3 of an inch or more are possible.

With the rain also comes cooler temperatures. Today’s high was forecast for 88 degrees, tomorrow’s is 82, and then temperatures are forecast to drop into the 70s through the weekend.
