Sept. 17 marks the two hundred and twenty-fifth anniversary of the drafting of the Constitution of the United States of America by the Constitutional Convention. To officially recognize this “magnificent document and the anniversary of its creation”, Altus Mayor David Webb has proclaimed “the week of Sept. 17 through 23 to be Constitution Week in the City of Altus, Okla. and asks citizens to reaffirm the ideals the Framers of the Constitution instituted in 1787.”

According to the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), “The tradition of celebrating the Constitution was started many years ago by the DAR. In 1955, the Daughters petitioned Congress to set aside September 17 to 23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week.” It was in response to the DAR actions that the U.S. Congress and signed into Public Law 915 on August 2, 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. According to the City of Altus proclamation, “Public Law 915 guarantees the issuing of a proclamation each year by the President of the United States of America designating Sept. 17 through 23 as Constitution Week.”

The DAR is known as the largest women’s patriotic organization in the world. the organization has over 165,000 members with approximately 3,000 chapters in all 50 states and 11 foreign countries. According to their release on Constitution Week, “The DAR has long promoted patriotism through commemorative celebrations, memorials, scholarships and activities for children, and programs for new immigrants.
