Church Women United luncheon on Friday

Church Women United will meet Friday, March 1 at the First United Methodist Church. The free luncheon will start at 11:30 a.m. The program will be a Bible-based message. It is a time for women of all faiths to gather and fellowship with each other. For more information please call Carol at 482-4627.

An informational meeting for Lifeguard training will be held at the Altus City pool at 5:15 pm on March 6th. Classes will start on March 15th Any questions please call (580)481-2269 or (580)301-0396.

First Baptist Church, 300 North Main, will offer first Saturday soup Kitchen from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Saturday, March 2. The menu will be chicken tetrazzini, French bread and salad bar, dessert and drinks. Please join them for a warm delicious meal and fellowship. All are welcome.

The Doctor Who Fan Film Altus Chapter will host a second introduction meeting on March 2, at 5:00 p.m. at the Clay Café, 1117 N. Jackson, to plan and organize the fan filmed Dr. Who movie. Tipton Senior Citizens will meet Monday, March 4, in the newly remodeled Senior Citizens Building on Tipton. There will be good classic Country music and fellowship. Food line opens at 4:30 p.m. with hamburgers, drinks and desserts on the menu at a cost of $4.

The Southwest Oklahoma Republican Women will host a Municipal Candidate Forum, Monday, March 25, 6:30 p.m., at the WOSC Band Hall. All candidates are invited to attend.

The Altus Hispanic Association invites all Altus High School seniors (regardless of race, religion, or gender) to apply for the $500 scholarship for college. Applications can be picked up at the AHS counselor’s office or by calling AHA Vice-President Raul Guerra at 471-6509, or President Mary O. Esparza at 301-9235. Deadline to apply is April 30.

Operation CARE will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 11 a.m.

Joseph’s Closet will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2-3:30 p.m., This will enable folks to get a clothing voucher from Operation CARE, and go to Joseph’s Closet , 208 E. Cypress (Presbyterian Church) on the same day. They are also in need of volunteers to help sort and stock shelves. Call Sandy at 481-8648 if you’d like to help.

Donations are being accepted at NBC Bank, for the family of Edi Ortega. A fund has been set up to help with funeral costs and ongoing expenses and hardship for widow Laura and their child Aiden. All donations are encouraged.

The Cancer Centers of Southwest Oklahoma on the Jackson County Memorial Hospital campus is recruiting volunteer drivers for the 12-passenger van that provides transportation for cancer patients. Volunteer drivers must have a current driver’s license. The volunteer application can be picked up at the cancer center at 1200 East Broadway. Mission on Wheels is in need of non-perishable food items for the needy. Donations of food and clothing are taken on Mondays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Giveaway are held on Wednesdays and Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. at 213 W. Walnut. A Senior Citizens Dance is held at the Altus Community Center on Falcon Road on Thursday nights at 7 p.m. following a potluck supper. The public is always invited. Call Calvin at 482-6629 for more information.

The Altus Junior High School Library is searching for copies of past yearbooks, especially from the years when AJH was Southeast Junior High. The Lions Club meets every Thursdays from noon to 1 p.m. at the Western Oklahoma State College multipurpose room.

English Village Manor has collected recipes from employees and residents and compiled them into a cookbook. The books can be purchased at the facility. Call 477-1133 for cost or more information.

Altus Ballroom Dancers meet 7 to 9 p.m. each Monday in the east end of the Altus Community Center on Falcon Road. New couples are welcome to come for an evening of ballroom dancing. The Altus Meal Site is needing volunteers to help deliver meals to those who are homebound. Meals are delivered Monday thru Friday. Any time you can give is appreciated. If you would like to volunteer call the Altus Meal Site at 580-482-1290. The Altus Meal Site is a part of Southwest Oklahoma Community Action Group.

The Operation CARE Food Pantry offers free food to qualified applicants every third Saturday of the month. 10:30 Devotion and food pantry open 11 to 12 noon.

The Southwest Oklahoma Quilt Guild meets on the first Thursday of each month at Grace United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall (south end of building) on South Park Lane at 10 a.m., potluck luncheon at noon, and business meeting at 1 p.m., followed by the monthly program. On the third Thursday of each month is a quilt workday, so bring a project and join in!

Christian Motorcyclists Association meets every first Thursday of the month at Fred’s on N. Main in Altus, at 7 p.m. Riders of all types of bikes welcome and even if you don’t have a motorcycle, you’re still welcome. More info at cmawot@yahoo.com.

SW Oklahoma Action RSVP Program is asking for deactivated cell phones, complete with batteries and chargers, for their Cell-phones-for-seniors program. Phones may be dropped off at the Altus RSVP office located on the first floor of the Towers at 101 E. Commerce or the Mangum RSVP office located at 215 North Oklahoma in Mangum.

Altus ASYMCA hosts a program, “Washers and Dryers for Airmen” where they will provide refurbished washers and dryers to airmen in need.
