They struggled through the early part of the season but rebounded and now they are set to make their fourth straight appearance in National Junior College Athletic Association’s Division II World Series.
The Pioneers will open play at noon Saturday against the Southeast Community College, N.C. Rams at David Allen Memorial Ball Park in Enid.
It’s the first appearance for the Rams in the World Series.
Western appears hitting their stride winning15 of their last 16 games.
“Yes,” Western Coach Kurt Russell said. “They (the players) are loose, I don’t see those mistakes (in practice).
Western will will go into the game as the top hitting team in the country with a team batting average of .402.They have hit 111 home runs and Jhomar Veras is the nations leader in that category with 23.
Russell indicated he would use veteran hurler Levi Lewis who has been used mostly as a closer in the second half of the season as a starter the first game on Saturday.
“He is the experienced guy. “That’s who we’re going with in a game like this.
