It's been a year since the Altus High Bulldogs won the Class 5A state track championships at the Moore High School track.

It was at that time that the Bulldogs 1,600-meter relay team blew away the rest of the field to seal the state championship for the Bulldogs.

One year later not much has changed. The only thing that is different is the site of the meet which this year will be Ardmore High School. The meet will be held on Friday and Saturday.

Coach Jeep Johnson's Bulldogs would love nothing more than see the state title ride on the 1,600-meter relay which is the last event of the meet.

"It looks like this meet will probably come down to the mile relay," said Johnson. "That's what we like. We want to be in a position to win and that's why we put so much emphasis on the mile relay."

If the meet does go down to the last event of the day, the Bulldogs should be in good shape. Freshman Joseph McCaskill, junior Zacc McCaskill and seniors James Holt and Devon Davis won the regional title last week and their time of 3:26.24 was the fastest of any of the times in the four regional meets held last week.

The Bulldogs and Shawnee enter as the co-favorites.

As in all meets, relays are important. Altus is the favorite in the 1,600 meter and the 800-meter where they have the best times of anyone at the regionals. If the Bulldogs win those relays it would give them 40 points and an advantage.

"If we could win those two, I would take it," Johnson said.

But Shawnee is the pick in the 3,200 meter relay. The Wolves could place one-two-three in the pole vault and that might propel them to the title. "Hopefully Zacc (McCaskill) can get in there and split them (Shawnee's pole vaulters) up," Johnson said.

But there are other important events that could help Altus. Holt is the favorite in the 300-meter hurdles while Marlon Brown should help in the 100-meter hurdles.

In the shotput the Bulldogs need points from Jared Lene or Jonathan Granado.

Lene could give some help in the discus where he place fourth last year at the state meet.

Holt could also walk away with a gold medal in the long jump where he placed last year and won the regional last week.

The Bulldogs also need points in high jump from Davis who second in the state last year and second at last week's regional meet.

If we go out there, relax, compete and do our best, that is all you can ask for," Johnson said.
