Jose Franco Martinez, 19, was arrested about 9:30 p.m. Saturday at his home at 421 W. Liveoak Street in the April 11 beating and rape of a 20-year-old Altus woman.

Martinez is being held without bail at the Jackson County Jail on a charge of first degree rape, said Altus Police Lt. Michael Turner.

According to an affidavit filed by Turner, the victim reported that a Hispanic male approached her on South Willard Street that Sunday evening, and she accepted his invitation to consume drugs with him. The two walked to an abandoned cotton gin on West South Street.

At the gin, the victim stated, the man physically assaulted and raped her. She said that during the attack she bit the man's hand so hard that it loosened her tooth. She was able to get away, and fled naked to a residence on South Crain Street. The occupants of that address took her to the sheriff's office to report the attack.

Turner goes on to state in the affidavit that the victim was bruised in the face and that the attending nurse at Jackson Memorial Hospital confirmed that she had been sexually assaulted.

After receiving several calls stating that Martinez was the attacker, police arrested him at his home Saturday. Martinez, who does not speak English, was interviewed at the police department with the aid of a translator. During the interview, the affidavit states, Martinez admitted attacking the victim, and that the victim had told him "no" on a couple occasions during the assault and pushed him away.

The arrest is the result of callers to Crime Stoppers, Turner said, and any reward will be determined after consultation with the Crime Stoppers board.
