Warming your vehicle up on a cold morning and going back inside the house, leaving the vehicle unattended, can be hazardous to the vehicle's life, as Altus resident Brian Adrian discovered on Wednesday.
Two male juveniles, ages 15 and 16, had escaped from a juvenile detention center in Altus according to a Washita County Sheriff's Department secretary who asked not to be identified. The pair allegedly stole Adrian's 2000 Chevy Suburban while he was letting the vehicle warm up,
According to Troop H Oklahoma Highway Patrol Headquarters in Clinton, the chase occurred in the Clinton area, after a notice was put out. OHP Trooper George Hoyle of the Kiowa County detachment responded after spotting the vehicle, turned around on Highway 9 east of Lone Wolf, and began a pursuit, which lasted approximately five minutes.
The Suburban turned north on Highway 44. Hoyle called OHP Headquarters in Clinton and advised them he was behind the stolen vehicle. Troopers from Washita County started southbound and pursued the vehicle on county roads and the juveniles finally wrecked the vehicle.
No one was injured and the juveniles were taken into custody in Washita County. According to the Washita County Sheriff's office, the boys were taken to a juvenile detention area where they are being held and were not released to their parents.
Adrian said his insurance adjuster called the damage to his vehicle repairable but Adrian feels the vehicle is totaled.
"I went out to see it and the whole right side and the right windows are gone and the roof has damage," Adrian said. "The vehicle was laying on its roof when they pulled the kids out."
The Suburban was towed to Canute after being recovered. Later today, Wilmes Chevrolet will be towing the vehicle in to have another look at what repairs will be needed.
Adrian said he now recommends keeping two sets of keys so you can secure your vehicle while it is warming up during these colder mornings.
He said he could not believe the quick response time on the incident, saying he called the report in at 7:25 a.m. and by 8 a.m., the police knew where the vehicle was.
"I'm really happy they caught the kids that did it," Adrian said.
