Altus-area residents are being urged to take the Blood Donor Challenge with Oklahoma Blood Institute or OBI and donate blood at the annual Battle of the Badges Blood Drive. The blood drive will be noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Altus Community Center.

The Battle of the Badges Blood Drive is one of the largest blood drives in Jackson County. Every year, county Emergency Medical Service, Altus Fire and Rescue and Altus Police Department come together for a friendly competition to try to get the most votes from the donors. The agency that has the most participants will get the honor of displaying the traveling plaque until the following year’s competition.

Healthy adults can typically give and will receive a blood donor summer T-shirt, and a pass for two to the Oklahoma City Zoo.

All blood provided to patients in area hospitals is blood given by donors through OBI. Each donation can save as many as three lives and as many as 154 hospitals across the state rely on OBI donors.

Donors wishing to make an international impact can support Global Blood Fund or GBF, a charity aimed at ending severe blood shortages in countries where 200,000 die yearly due to a lack of safe blood. By giving up their T-shirts, donors enable OBI to financially contribute to GBF to make training, supplies and technology available for their struggling blood centers.

Call the Altus Fire Department at 580-481-2231 or visit obi.org for an appointment to donate. Walk-ins are welcome.
