The Altus City Council approved the employment of Janice Cain to serve as the new Altus city manager.
Cain is currently the assistant city manager of Duncan, previously served 15 years as city manager of Marlow and has a background in city government.
“I was born and raised in Stephens County and I understand rural communities and the hometown spirit,” Cain said. “In my profession you know what is happening in other communities. Altus has positively addressed difficult issues such as the drought and water, and was successful in forming a plan and solving the issue. I feel that I can help in directing and implementing to get things done. In the interviewing process, I immediately noticed the mayor and council respectfully can agree to disagree.”
In May 2015 the city hired David Fuqua to serve as city manager. Fuqua was employed only eight months.
City Attorney Catherine Coke was immediately appointed as acting city manager until Jan. 22, when council approved consultant Larry Shelton of Chickasha to serve as acting city manager.
Shelton helped the city in the search and interviewed candidates for the city manager position.
“I am ready to start my new position and return to where I want to be in my profession,” Cain said. “I look forward to working with the mayor, council, all city departments and meeting the people of Altus.”
Cain is scheduled to begin her first day on the job as Altus city manager July 18.
