The first item on Thursday’s Altus School Board agenda was to appoint a new board member for board office #1, formerly held by Keith Phillips. There were no filings for the position, therefore the board had 60 days to appoint a temporary member. The board appointed James Patterson, who is employed with Valir Physical Therapy in Altus.
The reorganization of the Board through the election of officers then resulted in Steven Barnett being named as the new board president and Kelley Duncan as vice president.
Also during the meeting, Superintendent Roger Hill presented the Altus Public Schools with a painting on behalf of the National Bank of Commerce. Hill then gave the Grade Center Pre-enrollment dates for the 2016-17 school year. Pre-K through 5th grade will receive pre-enrollment packets on Monday, April 4. He said that they will need to be returned by Friday, April 8. All students entering Altus Public School for the first time will enroll on April 21 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Altus Early Childhood Center, currently Will Rogers, at 1100 North Forrest. All Pre-K students wishing to attend Rivers Elementary will enroll on Thursday, April 7 from 4 to 6 p.m.
Altus Athletic Director Jeremy Reed then acknowledged the Altus High School Boys Swim Team Class 5A State Champions, the Girls Swim Team State placers, Head Swim Coach Linda Wiginton and Assistant Michael Shive. Wiginton said, “Competing at State was hard due to the loss of team member Ethan Powers, but we won the championship, proving once again the talent of our AHS athletes.” Hill asked Coach Wiginton about fundraising efforts for the swim team state championship rings, and Wiginton said funds were still needed.
The High School Wrestling Team Class 5A state placers Shannon Ybarra and Mikey Abuen were honored, as well as AHS Coach Nick Williams for being the Class 5A-6A Wrestling Coach of the Year.
After recognitions, retirements were approved for Donna Blount, Special Ed at AHS; Ricky Bull, Business at AHS; and Janice Pellam, English at AHS, all effective May 20, 2016. Resignations from Kacie Bates Janet Diltz, Jaclyn Heath, Tamera Hughes, Amanda Leach, Shawn McClellon, Rebecca Morey, and Angie Orth, were also accepted. Substitutes and volunteers accepted include Wanda Hor, Erik Perez, David Player and James Pryor.
Child Nutrition Program Director Sabina C. Garrett presented the recommendations for the 2016-2017 breakfast and lunch prices for students and adults for the 2016 school year, all being increased by 25 cents. The USDA requires school food authorities to evaluate paid students meal pricing prior to the start of each school year. The Board approved the new prices with student lunch prices, grades K-4, to be $2.50, and grades 5-12 to be $2.75. Student breakfast prices for all grades will be $2.
Adult prices are not subsidized by federal funds. Board approved the adult paid lunches for staff to be $3.60 and visiting adults to be $4. Adult breakfasts for staff will be $2.35 and $3 for visiting adults.
There was no new new business and the meeting was adjourned.
