Altus Air Force Base, working with the City of Altus and Fox, Drechsler & Brickley, have teamed up to provide the main gate at the base with a fresh new look.

The citizens of Altus recently experienced the closing of the Altus AFB main gate entrance for a period of 2 ½ days. While most would agree that this was a slight inconvenience, all will agree that the new roadway is really nice and is very smooth to drive on.

The City of Altus received a grant from the Oklahoma Department of Commerce for this roadway upgrade to the base main gate entrance. This project was designed by FD&B and construction was awarded to T&G Construction, of Lawton. Milling and overlay work began Saturday morning, and by 9 p.m. Sunday, the project was substantially complete. The final touch (striping) will be completed this week.

Working closely with Altus AFB, LTC Greg Reich, Commander, 97th Civil Engineering Squadron, it was decided to close this stretch of roadway and allow T&G to move in and work. The project was completed in a short time span which meant less inconvenience to drivers.

By using state-of-the-art design, asphalt technology, as well as equipment and construction methods, it is estimated that this roadway will last well into the next few generations of US Air Force personnel that will pass through this entrance into the AAFB.
