A monumental event took place in Altus on Saturday, Sept. 19. Hundreds gathered at City Hall to participate in the first ever Prayer Walk around the city. After gathering, people broke off into groups for the event. The Prayer Walk was led by Altus Mayor Jack Smiley. Mayor Smiley said that although the event was his idea, he did not accomplish the organization of such an event on his own. The Prayer Walk was a combined effort of local pastors, church leaders, and city officials. The overwhelming result of the walk was because of the citizens who showed up.

Major dividing lines that can often separate people was crossed on Saturday. Race, religious denomination, gender and age created no barriers for the people who joined together at City Hall, marched together down Martin Luther King Street. Prayer Walk participants sung together as they marched, prayed and praised together; all for the common goal of seeking God’s grace and direction over Altus.

It was a powerful moment to be remembered and noted in the history book of Altus.
