Remember When

From the Howard Cotner collection, this photo shows the Jackson County Courthouse in 1928 covered in a blanket of snow. Outside the courthouse is an orchard of peach trees. The courthouse looked quite different on Thursday, though still covered in snow.

The square dancers of the 1950s include Harry Dotson, Jack O’Neal, Paul Stout, Luther Bellenger, Bill McIntosh, Cecilia, McIntosh, Gladys O’Neal, Ione Bellenger and “Son” Dotson. This group traveled all over Texas and Oklahoma competing in and winning square-dance competitions.

Genaro De Los Santos and Lisa Horton help Kathy Hale and Barbara Behrns hang banners around downtown Altus. Shortgrass and Main Street Altus with Deanna Roberts’ art class provide the banners to go around the square in 2000.
