Letter to the Editor policies

As local elections for Altus municipal and school elections approach, The Altus Times reminds readers of our letter to the editor policies. We believe the letters section serves as a good forum to discuss issues and helps to maintain a vibrant community. We prefer letters sent by email that will not require us to retype the letters, but we do take handwritten letters from those don’t use a computer.

However, we do have some restrictions:

Only one letter per writer per issue;

Letters must be no more than 400 words;

We will print additional letters and those with more words as a paid advertisement that must be paid in advance;

We do not let the writer determine the headline if one is used;

We do not run the same letter distributed to multiple people to sign;

We do not run letters from multiple sources such as a team of writers;

Letters must be signed or traceable to email addresses;

You must put an address and a phone number on your letters — we don’t publish that information but may call to verify the source; and

We reserve the right to not publish letters that we determine as offensive or libelous.
