There is something big that is scheduled to take place at the Altus reservoir this weekend and that is bringing people from near and far together to support a great cause.
Jackson County Memorial Hospital’s Rock Your Socks 5K will be taking over the reservoir Saturday for the second annual event with the goal of raising funds to benefit the Altus Cancer Center of Southwest Oklahoma.
“This is the second year for us to offer the Rock Your Socks 5K. We began the event last year in an effort to offer opportunities for physical fitness and to enhance our commitment to the health and well-being of the residents in Jackson County and surrounding communities,” said Director of Public Relations Amanda Reimer. “As the major healthcare provider in the community, we are happy to provide better opportunities for better wellness.”
“This year, our funds will assist the Altus Cancer Center with patient needs such as wheelchairs, patient recliners, and patient comfort items,” she said. “The center provides medical oncology, radiation therapy, outpatient chemotherapy, dermatology, and laboratory services. Jackson County Memorial Hospital is a partner in their service. They had a need and we are happy to assist them in helping to fulfill it.”
Temperatures are expected to climb into the low 90s later in the day, but participants in the event can relax a bit with the knowledge that the temperature is expected to be a cool 68 degrees at the 9 a.m. start time. With an abundance of sunshine also expected to dominate the sky over Altus, it is shaping up to be the perfect day to get out and walk or run around the reservoir while supporting this cause.
The event is slated to begin at 9 a.m. with Altus firefighters starting the runners off just to the north of Hubert’s Hump — the peninsula on the west side of the large reservoir — and continue around the reservoir in a counter-clockwise direction. Once participants reach the smaller portion of the reservoir, they will need to make two laps around it to take part in the full 5K experience.
The Altus Area Amateur Radio Association will be on hand to provide on-course direction assistance and ice cold water will be available for all participants across the finish line.
Several local businesses teamed up with JCMH and donated services and other goods.
Stand Strong Fitness and The Athletic Loft each gave one-month memberships to be given out with other prizes through a random drawing on race day.
In addition to the 5K event, Streat Chef’s food truck will be on location to offer a breakfast option to participants and visitors alike.
There will also be a pre-race yoga warm-up led by instructor and JCMH Chaplain Erin Martinez and a performance by the Southwest Gymstars.
Participants can pick up their packets at the front desk of JCMH on Thursday and Friday, or before 8:30 a.m. race day at the registration tent.
Participants also will need to pick up their timing chips before 8:30 a.m. on race day at the registration tent.
Awards will be handed out to qualifying participants once the event has been completed.
Those not participating in the event are still encouraged to come out and support the walkers, runners and cancer center by joining in on the festivities for a fun and memorable day.
