The summer is winding down and the start of the 2016-17 school year is approaching.
On Aug. 9, students from all over Altus will begin filing through the doors of their respective schools and embarking on an educational journey.
The beginning of school also signifies the beginning of the much anticipated Altus High School Bulldog football team’s battle to a second straight Class 5A State Championship and the Altus Bulldog swim team’s run to a third straight state championship.
The Bulldog football team kicks off its season with an Aug. 26 duel at Clinton before returning home to Hightower Memorial Stadium to take on heated rivals, the Lions of Vernon, Texas on Sept. 2.
The Bulldogs will enjoy a brief break in the action before returning to their home turf to take on Elk City on Sept. 16 and Del City on Sept. 23. They travel to Duncan on Sept. 30 before returning home for Senior Night on Oct. 7 to take on Ardmore.
They are at El Reno on Oct. 14, at home for Homecoming against Southeast on Oct. 21, at Lawton MacArthur on Oct. 28 and they close out the regular season at Western Heights on Nov. 4.
This Bulldog football team has been practicing hard all summer in order to defend its state championship and bring a second consecutive state championship back to Altus.
The Altus High School Lady Bulldog softball team begins play at Lawton MacArther on Aug. 9, at Noble on Aug. 11, at the Olustee Tournament on Aug. 12-13 and at Duncan on Aug. 15, before returning home to host Western Heights on Aug. 16.
They will travel to the El Reno tournament on Aug. 18-20, host Elk City on Aug. 23, play at Mangum on Aug. 29, at Elk City on Aug. 30, before coming home to face Duncan on Sept. 1 and Olustee on Sept. 2.
They are at Ardmore on Sept. 3, at home against Lawton Ike on Sept. 6, at the Sterling Tournament on Sept. 8-10, at Hollis on Sept. 12, at Lawton Ike on Sept. 13 and at the Sayre Tournament on Sept. 16-17.
They host Shawnee on Sept. 23 and Lawton MacArthur on Sept. 29, before regionals begins Oct. 6-8.
