Golfers will tee off for the 3rd Annual Rick Vassella Memorial Golf Tournament on July 23 at the Altus Air Force Base Windy Trails Golf Course. All proceeds will go to the Western Oklahoma State College Foundation.

Vassella was an avid golfer who was diagnosed with a brain tumor in June 2012. The subsequent surgery affected his left leg and arm rendering him unable to play the game he dearly loved. Vassella inherited his love for the game from his dad, Dominic Vassella, and the legacy continued with his son, Michael, who received a scholarship to play collegiate golf at East Central University in Ada.

Prior to his illness, Rick Vassella spent his free time golfing, restoring classic muscle cars and motorcycle riding. He fought hard, but sadly, lost his battle with cancer and passed away Jan. 9, 2014.

Vassella graduated from Altus High School in 1977,and attended Western Oklahoma State College. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Oklahoma State University and a master’s degree from Webster University. In 1988, he began a civil service career at Altus AFB and was the chief of wing operations plans when his illness resulted in his medical retirement.

In addition to his career with the Air Force, he was also an adjunct professor at the Altus AFB campuses of Southern Colorado and Wayland Baptist universities.
