In 1990, the Western Oklahoma State College Foundation, Inc. established a scholarship endowment in memory of long-time college faculty member and southwest Oklahoma educator Jim Holland. Jim’s untimely death created a desire for many friends and family members to make contributions to the Western Oklahoma State College Foundation, Inc. in his memory.
With the support of Jim’s family and friends, the WOSC Foundation, Inc. held the first Jim Holland Memorial Golf Tournament in November of 1991 with the goal of raising $10,000. The tradition has continued and after 24 years of fellowship and golf, the funds raised by the tournament have grown the scholarship endowment to over $228,000.00. Throughout those 24 years this endowment has made it possible to award over $100,000.00 in scholarship funds in all areas of academic study in memory of Jim Holland.
The continued success of the tournament is a direct result of the community’s support and commitment to providing scholarships to deserving students. More than 2500 golfers have enjoyed fellowship and friendly competition, some playing each and every year. Over 500 energetic volunteers have worked to prepare the course, work the tournament, bake cookies, serve food, and register teams. More than 700 sponsors have generously supported the tournament, many continuing to support each of those 24 years. Top golfers have also taken home 141 highly coveted trophies and bragging rights. The golfers, volunteers, and sponsors have made it possible for the Jim Holland Memorial Golf Tournament to become the longest running golf tournament in Southwest Oklahoma.
The 25th Annual Jim Holland Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, Aug. 8 with a four-person scramble shotgun start beginning at 8 a.m. at the Greens of Altus.
