BLAIR — The Blair Lady Broncs pulled off the doubleheader sweep of the Olustee Lady Eagles in high school fastpitch softball action Thursday afternoon at Blair.

Blair rolled in the first game 16-2, but had to go into extra innings to win the second game, 11-10. Olustee entered the contest winless at 0-4 while Blair began the day 2-1.

Game one was over after three innings due to a run-rule and was highlighted by an eight-run bottom of the first for Blair. Eight different Lady Bronc hitters were either hit by pitches or walked in the first inning. Blair scored four more times in the second frame and led 12-1 going to the third inning.

Olustee added one run in the top of the third and then Blair put the game away when shortstop Taylor Davis singled to left field to drive in two runs and bring the score to 16-2. Gabby Rodriguez and Tilly Garcia led Olustee with one hit each in game one. Davis and Casey Burnett both had one hit each for Blair.

Game two was completely different.

Blair jumped out to a 4-1 lead after two innings, but Olustee led 9-8 after three, spurred to the lead by a Veronica Almanza single which plated two runs. Both teams had fine defensive plays in the fourth. Olustee’s Tilly Garcia was thrown out at third trying to stretch a double into a triple, and after singling and advancing to third Blair’s Casey Burnett was later thrown out at home. After four innings the score was 10-9 Blair. In the top of the fifth, Olustee’s Gabby Rodriquez laid down a perfect bunt and brought teammate Tilly Garcia home tying the game up for Olustee. In the top of the sixth Olustee went down in order and then Blair’s Brianna Martinez led off with a triple and scored the winning run on a passed ball.

After the game Coach Matt Whitaker of Olustee praised his team.

“We played with heart that second game and played as a team,” Whitaker said. “Even though we were the underdog we picked one another up and never gave up.”

“They came out with a different pitcher that second game [Kalee Reyes] and we got out of sync,” Coach Russell Byers of Blair said. “We never gave up though. Jessica Huggins pitched well in relief in the second game.”

Olustee returns to action today against Duke Junior and Senior high schools and Blair hosts Snyder on Monday.
