OKLAHOMA CITY – The Altus boys soccer team wanted to close out the season right. After losing 12 straight games, they had hoped to pull off an upset of Northwest Classen in their final game of the season.
Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, it didn’t go as they hoped. They were shutout 9-0 by the Knights on Thursday at Taft Stadium.
The nine-goal deficit tied for most lopsided loss of the season for the Bulldogs. It was also the eighth time the squad had been held scoreless.
After a quiet first 14 minutes of action, Altus looked like it might be in it for the long haul.
NWC scored with 26 minutes on the clock to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. They added to it 10 minutes later when Roneyvin Maldonoda knocked a header into the back of the goal.
The Bulldogs were back on their heels and the Knights kept taking advantage of it.
Classen scored twice in a three minute span as they went ahead 4-0.
Despite playing four and five defenders around the goal, Altus was unable to slow down the attacking Knights. Foster Barber put Classen ahead 5-0 with 8:55 left in the half.
Because half its team was on the defensive side of the ball, the Bulldogs were unable to mount any type of charge on offense. Roberto Delgago, Alan Ortiz and Victor Cuellar hardly made it past midfield before the Knights gained control of the ball from them.
By the time the first half ended, the Knights held an 8-0 advantage.
Northwest Classen called off the dogs in the second half as they scored only one more goal in the game.
Altus ends the year with an 0-13 record.
