Bulldog track has big day at Elgin

ELGIN – The Altus High Women’s and Men’s track and field teams traveled to Elgin on Friday and both teams turned in some good performances. Both teams finished third in the 12-team field. In the Women’s division Elgin took the team title followed by Lawton High and Altus. In the Boy’s division Lawton High took top honors followed by Elgin and Altus. Taking first place for the women’s team was Jimmie Dollins in the 100 Hurdles (16.12) and 300 Hurdles (49.20). Finishing second were Kiandra Knight in the 100 Dash (13.02) and 200 Dash (26.74) and Jordan Benway in the Discus (101’10”).

“Jimmie and Kiandra work hard each day and it is showing up in their results,” said Coach Robert Garrison, “Benway beat her personal best by 11 feet and she will only get better.”

Finishing third was the 400 Relay team (52.4) comprised of Knight, Nia Hill, Jaycee Herring and Alicia Ayers, the 800 Relay team (1:50.10) comprised of Knight, Hill, Dollins and Herring and the 3200 Relay team comprised of Gracie Hernke, Emily Kate Pickett, Chauncey Beckner and Haley Leyja. Pickett, Hernke, Leyja and Ayers teamed up to get fourth in the 1600 Relay.

Also adding a fourth place finish were Olga Lopez in the 3200 Run and Leyja in the 400. Rounding out the scoring with a sixth place finish for the Lady Bulldogs was Pickett in the 800 (2:38). In the Junior High division Jozzlin Christon finished first in the Shot Putn (33’3”) and 6th in the Discus while Alyssa Hargis added a fifth in the 100 Hurdles and a sixth in the 300 Hurdles.

“Overall it was a pretty good day,” added Garrison. “Most of our times went down and all of our relays improved on their times.” Highlighting the boys action was Shaquan French who won the Long Jump (21’). Finishing second were Hassan Foye in the Long Jump (20’10”), Jovanni Rodriguez in the Discus (130’) and the 400 Relay team (44.44)

Getting third place points were French in the 100 Dash (11.38), Jake Vargas in the 300 Hurdles (43.90) and the 800 Relay team (1:32.63) Finishing fourth were Taven Birdow in the Shot Put, Benway in the Discus and 300 Hurdles and the 1600 Relay team. Josh Baker added a fifth place finish in the 800 Run while Trevor Williams added a sixth place finish in the 110 Hurdles. The 3200 Relay team also added a sixth place finish to end the scoring for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs enter a tough two week stretch. They will be in action Thursday at Chickasha and Saturday at Altus. Saturday, the Bulldogs will host the Altus Invitational.

Next Tuesday the track teams host the Western Conference Meet and they will end this stretch with the always tough OU John Jacobs Invitational next Friday.
