The Altus Bulldogs wrestling team battled to a fourth place finish over the weekend at the State Tournament. Head Coach Nick Williams was presented his trophy and introduced as the 5A/6A Coach of the Year.

The state competition was held inside the State Fairgrounds Arena Friday and Saturday.

When the matches were complete, two Bulldogs stood on podiums as State Champions. Montorie Bridges repeats as state champion at 126 lbs. getting the major decision against Tre Wright of Del City, 15-4.

Taven Birdow, 5A’s Offensive Player of the Year and Altus All-Stater in football, won his second state championship. Birdow won his first state championship his sophomore year as a Bulldog. On Saturday, Taven got the 8-1 decision against Twain Sauvageau from Noble.

The Bulldogs finished fourth with 96.5 points behind third place Lawton MacArthur’s 113 points, second place Coweta’s 122.5 points and first place Collinsville 127 points.

Collinsville won their sixth consecutive team state championship.

At 113 lbs. Altus’ Gage Gomez lost to Bennett Moudy of Coweta, 7-3 to finish runner-up.

Mikey Abuan finished fourth narrowly losing to John Woods of Durant, 10-8 at 152 lbs. Shannon Ybarra also took fourth place at 170 lbs.

Keegan Pride took third place after winning a 1-0 match against Montana Phillips.
