Earlier in the season, the Bulldogs wrestling team won the Carl Albert Tournament. That tournament was basically a preview of what the Bulldogs can expect tomorrow at Regionals. The Regionals will consist of 16 teams and will be held at Western Heights beginning at noon on Friday.
At that Carl Albert tournament, 11 of the 16 teams that the Bulldogs face this weekend at Regionals were there: Ardmore, Chickasha, Del City, Guthrie, Lawton MacArthur, Noble, NW Classen, Piedmont, Shawnee, Southeast and Western Heights.
The Regionals will also include three teams that the Bulldogs have already defeated in Dual match-ups this season: Lawton Eisenhower, El Reno and Woodward. Bishop McGuiness is also at Regionals to round out the field.
At Carl Albert, the Bulldogs placed eight wrestlers in the top four. Wrestlers must finish in the top four at Regionals in order to qualify for next week’s State Tournament.
“It’s a new season,” said coach Ulysees Bridges III. “It’s the time of the year that the entire season has been geared toward. It’s time to qualify for the state.”
The Regional team championship will most likely come down to Altus and Lawton Mac Arthur. Piedmont will look to be in the hunt for the team title as well.
“In order for us to have a strong shot the next week at State,” said Bridges III, “we need to qualify as many as possible. It would be great to get all 14 advanced.”
In all, 11 Bulldogs finished in the top six at the Carl Albert Tournament. The Bulldogs stand a strong chance to qualify many wrestlers for a chance to win state next week.
