The Altus Bulldogs swimmers head into the state championship meet with confidence after a fast swim at the West Regionals.
The girls place third at Regionals out of 29 teams and the boys were dominant as usual. The boys win Regionals for the third consecutive year with 417 points followed by Carl Albert with 287. No other team scored above 200 points.
Only the 24 fastest times from the West and East Regionals combined are qualified to swim at the State Championship meet.
Altus boys take first in the medley relay narrowly missing the state record by one little second. The boys also take first in the 200 freestyle relay and again narrowly missed the state record by .6 of a second.
Daniel Brown and Walker Sacco finish 1st and 2nd respectively in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle.
Brown and Sacco’s times were quite a bit faster than the East Region’s winners. Daniel Brown brought home four gold medals and Walker Sacco won two golds and two silvers.
The State Meet will be held Feb. 19 and 20.
Altus Bulldog boys are the favorite to win the title. This comes with added pressure of carrying that expectation and a target on their backs. Teams like Carl Albert, Ft. Gibson, Booker T. and Stillwater are right on the Bulldogs’ heals and look to push Altus for every tick on the clock.
The Bulldogs will have to turn in great performances in every event. Make a point to drop some encouragement on these athletes, coaches, parents, bus drivers and fans making the trip to State.
This is a huge moment in the lives of all involved in this chase for championships. Both the boys and girls have huge goals they are set on accomplishing. For the boys, winning a state championship this season would put them on a level all by themselves.
As great as the Altus swimming program is, and has been for many years under the direction of The Legend coach Linda Wiginton (current National Coach of the Year), they have never been back-to-back State Champions.
