7th grade girls’ win in late drama
CLINTON – The Altus Junior High 7th grade girls basketball team closed out a very successful season on Monday night by defeating Clinton 23-17.
This followed the team taking the Consolation Championship at the Cache Tournament on Saturday. The win moved the 7th grade girls to a fantastic 16-3 record for the season.
The Clinton contest didn’t start out well for the Lady Dawgs as the first quarter closed with the Lady Dawgs up 4-2. The Lady Reds then outscored the Lady Dawgs 12-0 in the second quarter to build a 14-4 halftime lead. The Lady Dawgs came out in the third quarter and didn’t panic, instead they slowly chipped away at the lead and played good defense. Altus outscored Clinton 7-0 to go into the final quarter down 14-11.
Altus took the lead with 4 minutes left in the game and held Clinton to just three points in the final quarter while scoring 12 to take the victory 23-17. Lakysia Johnson led the team with 17 points.
“This has been a great season for these girls and I couldn’t be happier,” said Coach Tommy Tucker. “It will be fun to watch them grow up in the system and see what they turn out to be.”

8th grade girls’ lose heartbreaker late
CLINTON – Playing some of their best basketball of the season the Altus Junior High 8th grade girls built a five point lead late but let it slip away in the final minutes as the Clinton Lady Reds defeated Altus 29-23 on Monday night.
The first quarter was a back and forth affair as Altus was able to crack the girl to girl defense of Clinton. Altus went into the second quarter up 8-7.
Altus pushed their advantage to 14-9 at the half on the hot shooting of point guard Annie Petzold, who scored all six points in the quarter. The third period was another back and forth affair as Clinton outscored Altus 8-7. The Lady Dawgs went into the final frame up 21-17.
The Lady Dawgs ran out of gas though in the 4th period as the Lady Reds found their shooting touch and took the lead with just under three minutes to play.
Clinton outscored Altus 12-2 in the final frame to take the victory 29-23. Petzold led Altus with 15 points.
