CACHE – The Altus Junior High 7th and 8th grade girls are headed to the consolation finals of the Cache Basketball Tournament on Saturday after a pair of wins on Thursday. The 8th grade girls knocked off Lawton Mac 20-17 in overtime while the 7th grade girls defeated Lawton Tomlinson 48-24.
Altus’ 8th grade girls were sent to the losers bracket on Monday after getting defeated by Cache. Altus took on a Lawton Mac team that had already beaten the Lady Dawgs earlier this season 37-11. Altus fell behind after the first quarter 4-1 and went into the half trailing 6-3.
“We just put our best defender (Annie Petzold) on their best offensive threat to shut her down and it worked,” said coach Robert Garrison. “We had a bunch of open shots in the first half that we just couldn’t get connect on.”
Mac outscored Altus in the third quarter 5-3 to take an 11-6 lead into the final frame.
Altus went on a 4-1 run in the third quarter and tied the game at 12 on a Petzold jumper. Altus took a brief lead after Aubri Hughes hit a jumper but Mac was able to score four straight to take a 16-14 lead with 35 seconds left in the game.
Petzold fouled out of the game with 30 seconds remaining and Mac went to the free throw line. Mac missed both free throws and Altus’ Jerzey Ybarra hit a shot to knot the score and force overtime.
The Lady Scots’ best shooter fouled out a minute into the final frame on a Ybarra layup. Ybarra missed the free throw but got her own rebound and put up another jumper to give Altus a 20-16 lead with less than 30 seconds remaining.
Mac was able to hit a free throw late to make the final score 20-17.
“We played hard and finally broke through with a victory,” said Garrison. “These girls really deserved this all year and I’m very proud and happy for them.”
Ybarra led the team with seven points while Petzold added six.
Altus is to play Duncan on Saturday in the Consolation Championship.
