It’s time for the Altus High School swimming teams to make a run, rather a swim, for the championship.
This past Friday Altus was one of five teams competing for the Area Championships. Altus coasted through the Area meet with ease. It won’t be easy from here on out.
Tomorrow and Saturday, the Bulldogs will be one of 29 teams competing for the West Region Championship. Tomorrow, all swimmers will compete in the preliminaries. Only the top 16 in each event will advance to the finals. There are no relays on Friday. Each team is allowed one entry in each of the three relays. The relays will be held on Saturday during finals.
Teams are permitted four entries in each of the individual events. Altus will have the maximum four entries in every individual event. That is rare among 5A teams. With 29 teams there is a potential of 116 swimmers in any individual event. This makes it more clear about just how difficult it is to make the top 16.
Of those who make the top 16 for Saturday’s finals, not all will make State. Only 24 swimmers for each individual make State. Therefore, out of the 16 swimmers who advance to the Regional finals from the West and 16 swimmers from the East, there are eight swimmers that will not qualify for the State Championship Meet.
Only the 24 fastest times from Saturday’s Regional finals will advance to State.
Then, the Friday preliminaries at State will eliminate more and only the top 16 swim finals at State.
The Bulldogs enter Regionals swimming fast and with confidence. There are 18 boys and 14 girls that will compete this weekend at Regionals. That’s more Bulldogs competing at Regionals than any other Altus team under coach Linda Wiginton.
A look at current OSSAA rankings for class 6A shows the Bulldogs have wins over Edmond Memorial ranked #3, Edmond Santa Fe #6 and #11 Mustang as well as a dominant performance over Amarillo High and Tascosca.
The Bulldogs only loss this season was to Edmond North who is currently ranked number 1 in class 6A.
One more tidbit: Take a look at the 6A rankings. Our boys’ only loss is to #1 ranked Edmond North. During this season we beat #3 Memorial, #6 Santa Fe and #11 Mustang. BTW, we also took down Amarillo High and Tascosa.
