The Altus High School wrestling team won the Big 4×4 Wrestling Tournament in Ponca City on Saturday.
The tournament was hosted by teams from Ponca City, Stillwater, Perry and Blackwell. The tournament host location is rotated annually between these four schools. Ponca City was this year’s host school.
Each year each of the teams invites a team. The teams that were invited were Altus, Choctaw, Claremore and Owasso. The Bulldogs are currently ranked #2 in 5A. Claremore is ranked #13 in 5A. Choctaw is ranked #1 in 6A. Stillwater is ranked #8 in 6A. Ponca City is ranked #9 in 6A. Perry is ranked #2 in 3A. Blackwell is ranked #5 in 3A and Owasso is unranked.
Even though the Bulldogs were shorthanded due to Taven Birdow being on a recruiting trip over the weekend to Navy, the Bulldogs dominance still came through. The tournament started at 10 a.m. in pool play with the top two wrestlers from each pool advancing to the championship bracket. The finals began at 5 p.m., and when the sweat dried on the mat, the Bulldogs were the champions.
Montorie Bridges, the defending 5A state champion and twice an All-American headed to Wyoming University next year, was acknowledged as the Big 4×4 Tournament Outstanding Wrestler.
Tonight at 6 p.m. inside the Cletus B. Street Fieldhouse the wrestlers will host #6 in class 4A Clinton. It is senior night for the Bulldogs.
I strongly urge you to go see these kids compete. The AHS wrestling program has been at the front of the line for a very long time now. These Bulldogs will make you proud. Those in attendance tonight may be watching the class 5A team state champions as well as several individual state champions.
A few of these Bulldogs are in the conversation for best Bulldog wrestlers in the history of Altus High School.
