Both Altus High School swim teams had more points in Friday’s Area Championships than the other four schools combined. Altus defeated Duncan, Lawton MacArthur, Lawton High and Lawton Eisenhower to float into next week’s Regional Championships in Edmond.
Altus made a statement to the rest of Class 5A that they are in this thing to win it. The Bulldogs won 18 of the 22 events on Friday. Many of the events saw the Bulldogs claiming gold, silver and bronze medals.
The boys 200 medley relay of Walker Sacco (senior), Chase Hubbard (freshman), Konner Croft (senior) and Daniel Brown (senior) broke the area championship record in the 50 freestyle.
Dayna Brown broke the 50 freestyle record for the girls.
“We swam awesome,” said coach Linda Wiginton. “Many swam personal best times. We will determine Regional teams this weekend. I am very proud of all of these kids. The girls really raced today and were committed to dropping times. This is exactly where we need to be going into Regionals.”
Wiginton was recently chosen as the National Swim Coach of the Year and joins AHS basketball assistant coach Janice Hardwick are finalists for National Coach of the Year.
Good Luck at Regionals next week swimmers. Go on and get what you have worked for.
