AJH 7th sweeps Elgin, 8th splits

It was a rough and tumble night for the Altus Junior High 7th and 8th grade Lady Dawgs against the Elgin Lady Owls. The 7th grade Lady Dawgs held on for a 36-27 victory while the Altus 8th grade fell 40-9.

The 7th grade contest was close throughout with Altus taking a 8-7 lead into the second frame. Elgin came right back in the second frame outscoring the Lady Dawgs 9-6 to take a 16-14 halftime lead.

Altus stiffened their defense and held the Lady Owls scoreless while scoring nine points to take a 23-16 lead into the final frame. Altus continued to outscore the Lady Owls in the final frame 13-11 to take the 36-27 victory.

“I had a strong talk with them at the half and it really made a difference in the third quarter,” said coach Tommy Tucker.

Lakysia Johnson led Altus with 20 points while Brianna McQuiggan added six points.

The 8th grade game was tough throughout with four technical fouls called in the first four minutes of the game. Elgin broke out to a 10-2 first quarter lead. Altus couldn’t find their shooting touch and Elgin stretched the lead to 23-5 at the half.

Altus couldn’t cut into the Lady Owl advantage in the second half as Elgin took the contest 40-9.

Both teams will be back home on Thursday as they host Lawton Central before heading to the Cache Tournament next Monday.

ALTUS – 36 ELGIN – 27

ALTUS – McQuiggan 2-2-6, Scott 1-0-2, Welch 2-0-4, Villarreal 1-2-4, Johnson 9-2- 20. Totals: 15-6-36.

ELGIN – 40 ALTUS – 9

ALTUS – Davis 1-3-5, Torres 1-0-2, Petzold 0-2-2. Totals 2-5-9.

The 7th grade boys won 35-16. The 8th grade boys stole the in-bounds pass in the closing seconds to get the dramatic 33-31 win.
