LAWTON – The Altus Junior High 7th and 8th grade Lady Dawgs basketball teams traveled to Lawton on Thursday to take on the Lady Wolves of Lawton Tomlinson.

The 7th grade team floored the Lady Wolves 50-23, while the 8th grade girls fell 38-13.

In the 7th grade contest, the Lady Dawgs broke out to an 18-7 first quarter lead behind Lakysia Johnson’s 16 points.

Altus continued to pull away in the second frame by outscoring Tomlinson 11-7 to take a 29-14 lead into the half.

The second half was a replay of the first as the Lady Dawgs outscored Tomlinson 15-7 in the third quarter and 6-2 in the fourth to take the easy 50-23 victory.

Johnson led the Lady Dawgs with 33 points while Briana McQuiggan added five points.

“This group is fun to watch,” said coach Tommy Tucker. “I’m so proud of these girls. After coaching high school boys the last few years, I was worried some about coaching 7th grade girls. These girls will get after you start to finish. We full-court press the whole game and these ladies know how to do it. I am having so much fun this year coaching basketball.”

In the 8th grade contest, the Lady Dawgs just couldn’t find their shooting touch as the Lady Wolves bolted out to a 13-2 first quarter lead. The Lady Dawgs began to pull back into the game scoring the first six points of the second quarter. Tomlinson then outscored Altus 8-1 the rest of the way. Altus went into the half trailing 21-9.

The third quarter was the downfall for the Lady Dawgs as Tomlinson reeled off seven straight points to start the quarter in route to outscoring Altus 13-2 to build a commanding 34-11 lead heading into the final frame. Tomlinson outscored Altus 4-2 in the final quarter to make the final score 38-13.

Jerzey Ybarra led Altus with five points, while ShaRiya Davis had three points.

Both teams will host Elgin on Monday.
