LAWTON – The Altus Junior High 7th and 8th grade girls basketball teams traveled to Lawton Mac on Thursday and split the games. The 7th grade girls won 37-23 while the 8th grade dropped a 37-11 decision.
After getting off to a slow start the 7th grade Lady Dawgs began to slowly pull away in the first quarter opening up an 11-2 lead heading into the second frame.
Altus continued to pull away in the 2nd frame by outscoring the Lady Scots 7-4 to take an 18-6 lead into the half.
Altus pushed the lead to 26-6 when they called off their press. Mac then went on to outscore the Lady Dawgs in the quarter 13-10 as Altus went into the final frame up 28-19.
The Lady Dawgs were able to outscore Mac 9-4 in the final frame to get the victory 37-23.
Lakaisha Johnson scored 18 points to led Altus while Brianna McQuiggan added 11 points.
The 8th grade contest started out well for the Lady Dawgs as Annie Petzold hit her first two shots to give Altus a 4-0 lead but Mac then outscored Altus 17-1 to take a 17-5 lead in to the second frame.
Mac pulled away in the second frame by outscoring Altus 10-2 and the Lady Dawgs went into the half trailing 27-7.
Altus changed up their defense in the second half but couldn’t find their shooting touch as Mac outpointed the Lady Dawgs 10-4 in the second half to get the victory.
Altus was led by Petzold, who scored 8 points.
Next action for both teams will be Monday when they travel to Elk City.
