CLINTON – The Altus Junior High 7th grade girls basketball team opened up their season by placing third at the Clinton Tournament. Altus defeated Woodward on Tuesday, lost a close battle with Weatherford on Thursday, and beat Alva on Saturday to take third place.
On Tuesday, the Lady Dawgs built a 17-8 halftime lead against Woodward and stretched it out to 20 -8 midway through the third quarter, but the Lady Boomers stormed back to tie the game at 23 heading into the final quarter. Altus outscored Woodward 13-7 in the fourth to take the victory 36-30.
Lakisha Johnson led Altus with 15 points while Brianna McQuiggan added 13.
In the Semi-Finals, Altus took on Weatherford. Both teams left the first quarter knotted at 8. Altus outscored the Lady Eagles 5-4 in the second frame to grab a 13-12 halftime lead.
Weatherford took command in the third frame by outscoring the Lady Dawgs 8-4 to take a 20-17 lead into the final frame. Altus was able to chip the lead down to one with less than a minute left but Weatherford was able to hold on for a 27-23 win.
Lakisha Johnson was a one girl scoring machine as she scored all 23 points to lead Altus.
In the third place game on Saturday Altus took on the Alva Lady Goldbugs and Altus left little doubt of who was going to win this game by taking a 12-4 first quarter lead. The Lady Dawgs held Alva scoreless in the 2nd quarter and took a 22-4 lead into the half.
Altus outscored Alva 8-2 in the third and 10-5 in the fourth quarter to claim a 40-11 victory.
Johnson led Altus with 18 points while McQuiggan added 8.
Altus (2-1) will travel to Lawton Ike on Monday.
