The Altus Bulldogs swimming team opens their 2015-16 season at the Harrah Invitational tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 7.
This will be a highly competitive meet. The Harrah meet is usually a good barometer for measuring the strength of the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs swim teams.
The men’s team will be defending last year’s 5A State Championship. They certainly have the talent coming back this year to make a defense of the title. The ladies’ team has been climbing in the rankings with great expectations of this year’s team.
The men’s team is returning nine seniors off of last year’s team. Both men’s and ladies’ teams are adding quality freshman swimmers to already strong teams.
After the Harrah season opener, the Bulldogs will host meets each of the next two Saturdays. At the Nov. 14 meet, the Bulldogs will welcome Carl Albert, Del City and Wichita Falls, Texas to town. On Nov. 21, Amarillo High and Amarillo Tascosa will come try to out swim the Bulldogs at the Altus City Pool. Last year, the Bulldogs traveled to Amarillo and lost. The Bulldogs will look to even the score with Amarillo in two weeks.
Both of these meets will start at 10 a.m. and provide quality competition for the Bulldogs. For Bulldog fans, it’s a great opportunity to see our top ranked swimmers in action.
The Bulldog swimming team is raising funds for travel expenses and equipment. A super raffle with drawings at seven home meets will be taking place throughout the season. Tickets can be purchased at all home meets and from Bulldog swimmers.
It seems like I am consistently trying to point out that this senior class is something special. The greatness of this class is certainly not limited to football. The AHS swimming team boasts some of the fastest high school swimmers in the nation.
Expectations are very high for this group. The men’s team is the early favorite to win another state championship. The ladies are coming on strong and expected to be right in the thick of the hunt themselves.
