The Altus High School Bulldog Cross Country Team competed at the state meet last Saturday. The meet was held at Edmond Santa Fe. The Bulldogs ran against 112 of the best that the state has to offer in class 5A.
The team finished in 14th place. Alan Ortiz, a senior and the best runner for the Bulldogs, ran a blazing time to finish in 6th place. Ortiz’ time of 16:59 was fast enough to qualify him as an all-state selection.
This makes Alan a two-time, all-state selection. Only one other Bulldog in the school’s history has achieved this feat. Billy Symons was a two-time, all-stater in 1989-90.
“We had a great season,” said coach Rick Patterson. “The state meet was a learning experience for us. We will regroup and be back to work running again next year. We will lose two seniors off of this team. Ortiz and Stephen Dwyer will graduate. The Bulldogs will return four sophomores and one freshman. We should benefit from two junior high runners and one or two JV runners that will make the next couple of years very strong for us. Both the boys and girls’ teams were good, hard workers. They were a joy for me to coach this year. They are a great group of kids. I want to compliment Alan Ortiz specifically. He is a very talented runner from a very talented family. We will miss him.”
