8TH Dawgs drops double overtime thriller against Anadarko, 38-36
ANADARKO – The 8th grade Dawgs ended their great season in Anadarko on Tuesday. The outcome of this final match will certainly leave a sour taste in the mouths of these young Bulldogs. Turnovers were costly to the Altus Junior High 8th grade Dawgs as they dropped a 38-36 game to the Anadarko Warriors in double overtime.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Dawgs got on the board first when quarterback Dylan McGill made a great read and ran 49 yards for the score. McGill ran in the conversion and Altus led 8-0.
The Warriors were able to score on a 10-yard pass with :50 seconds left in the half . The conversion was good and the teams went into the half tied at eight.
The Warriors took the second half kickoff and drove down the field. With 1:29 remaining in the quarter the Warriors scored on a two yard run. The conversion was good and Anadarko led 16-8.
Altus came right back on their next possession and scored on an 8-yard run by fullback Hunter Webb. Cabe Dickerson ran in the conversion and the teams went into the final quarter tied at 16.
With 3:34 left in the game the Warriors were able to score on a 6-yard run. The conversion was good and the Warriors were up 24-16.
Altus needed only one minute to knot the score back as Dickerson went in from four yards out. Davyon Ford ran in the conversion and the teams were tied at 24.
The Dawg defense forced the Warriors to fumble with a minute to go and the Dawgs tried to get in the end zone, but, after a 50-yard run by Webb, the Dawgs turned the ball over and the teams went into overtime.
Anadarko got the ball first in the overtime and scored on their fourth play. The conversion was no good and it was Altus’ turn. Altus needed just one play as Webb went around the left side and scored. The conversion failed though and the teams went into a second overtime.
Altus had the ball first and scored on their fourth play as McGill went in from a yard out. The conversion failed and the Warriors had their turn.
The Warriors scored on their third play and then ran in the conversion to take the victory.
Webb, Dickerson, Nathan Ybarra, Caleb Leyja, Deondre Martinez and Kale Gallagher had good defensive games.
The Altus offense was led by McGill who had 102 yards rushing on eight carries. Webb added 86 on six carries.
The loss ended the season for Altus with a 5-3 record.
7th Dawgs close season with win, 16-14 over Anadarko
ANADARKO – The Altus Junior High 7th grade football team ended their season in fine fashion with a close 14-12 victory over the Anadarko Warriors.
Altus got on the board first with 2:14 left in the first quarter when quarterback Raul Facundo hit Chehemu Morgan II for a 29-yard touchdown pass. The conversion failed and Altus led 6-0 going into the second frame.
After the Dawg defense forced a Warrior fumble, the Dawgs took one play to score as Morgan went around the right side of the line for a 30-yard score. Facundo connected with Esteven Diaz for the conversion and Altus led 14-0 heading into the half.
It was a different contest in the second half. Anadarko took the opening kickoff and scored on an eight-yard run with three minutes left in the third quarter . The conversion failed and Altus led 14-6 heading into the final frame.
Neither offense could get cranked up in the fourth quarter but Warriors were finally able to break the Dawg defense with :54 seconds left in the game on a 22-yard pass. The conversion was stuffed by Riley Barrington and Elijah Boyle and Altus was able to hang on for the 14-12 win.
Barrington, Ryan Rogers, Laethon Patterson and Boyle led the Dawg defense. The running attack was led by Facundo who had 42 yards rushing on five carries while Morgan had 41 yards on four carries.
The win ended the season for the Dawgs with a 7-1 season ledger.
