The Altus High School Cross Country teams competed in the Regional Meet at Norman over the weekend. Although the girls’ season ends at Regionals, the boys have advanced to the State Meet.
Alan Ortiz, the Bulldogs top finisher, placed second out of 100 runners with a 16.59 time. With the second place finish, Ortiz is named All-Regional.
“All seven runners made great contributions for us,” said coach Rich Patterson. “It took the whole team performing at a high level to make the team place seventh. I am proud of these kids. They have put in the work it takes to compete at state. I am really happy for this group. They deserved to get to run against the state’s best next week in Edmond.”
Ryan Oden narrowly missed finishing in the top 15. Oden’s time of 17.50 was good enough for 16th place. The top 15 were named to the All-Regional team.
Josh Baker placed 50th (19.08), Adrian Aviles -70th (20.01), Jessie Benitez – 74th (20.17), Stephen Dwyer – 75th (20.18), Alan Palestino – 77th (20.19).
The girls finished in 11th place. Grace Hernke was again the top runner for the Lady Bulldogs finishing 46th with a time of 23.12.
The Lady Bulldogs had a first place and second place finish as a team this season. Hernke missed qualifying for state by only 25 seconds.
“I have high expectations for this group of girls next season,” said Patterson. “We return five of the seven girls from this year’s team. So, we should be stronger as a team.”
Good Luck at STATE, Bulldogs!!
